Madras Masala is one of the newer batch of Indian restaurants that has reinvigorated Indian food in Ann Arbor.
The daily lunch buffet amply shows their cooking prowess and balances vegetarian-friendly dishes well with those for the carnivorous crowd. My wife and I found everything we tasted on the buffet to be fresh and full of flavor- the buffet isn't simply a collection of toned-down dishes as we've seen at too many other restaurants.
Palak Aloo (potatoes in spinach) seldom ranks very high on my list of must-taste dishes, but Madras Masala's take on it is exceptionally flavorful. I was also very encouraged by the low amount of salt used in the dishes.
After having far too much tough Tandoori Chicken at a few other Indian places, I was leery of trying it here, but Madras Masala's ranks up there with some of the best I've had, even after it had sat out in the buffet for a while. It was moist and flavorful, leaving a slight tingle on the lips.
The decor is pleasant, if slightly fraying at the edges. The carpet was pulling up in places and a bit threadbare in others, and we had a couple of chipped plates, but everything was clean. Frankly, the food is the draw here, and I can't see how anyone would spend much time looking at the floor!
The service during our visit was a little weak- our beverage order was forgotten on the first try, and the waiter was slow to refill our water, but it was also a rather busy lunch hour.
The new group of Indian restaurants in town, including Madra Masala and Temptations, have breathed some much-appreciated new life into the Indian restuarant scene in Ann Arbor. |

One of the better Indian restaurants in the area. Quick pleasant service with flavorful food. The lunch buffet is the best in town, and a good deal at $8. |
